CleanLight Pro vs CleanLight Hobby: Which Handheld UV-C Unit Fits Your Canopy?

The CleanLight Hobby (11W lamp) is the right handheld unit for a tent or a small room with up to roughly ten plants. The CleanLight Pro (36W lamp, more than three times the Hobby's power) is the right unit for a dedicated grow room, multiple tents, or any grow where daily treatment time matters. Both use the same 254 nm technology and the same daily routine; the difference is how much canopy each pass covers.

TL;DR

  • Same wavelength, same method, same residue-free result. The Pro simply runs a more powerful lamp, so each plant takes less time and larger canopies stay practical.
  • Pick the Hobby for a 2x2 to 4x4 tent, a closet grow, or a mother-plant shelf.
  • Pick the Pro for a dedicated room, a perpetual setup, several tents, or a light-rail mount.
  • Both ship with safety glasses, gloves, a manual, and 120V (US) or 230V (EU) options.
  • Neither treats the air. For airborne spore load in a room, that is the CleanLight Air.

How the two units differ

Both units are the same idea: a germicidal UV-C lamp in a parabolic reflector that you sweep slowly over the canopy so spores on leaves, stems and buds are hit with enough dose to stop them reproducing. The reflector shapes the light downward and into the foliage, and shields you from direct exposure.

The difference is lamp power. The Pro runs a 36W lamp, the Hobby an 11W lamp. In practice that means the Pro covers more canopy per pass and needs less time per plant to deliver the same dose. On three plants that difference is a minute. On thirty plants, every day for eight weeks of flower, it is the difference between a routine you keep and a routine you skip.

Choose the Hobby if

  • You grow in a 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 tent, or a closet, with up to roughly ten plants.
  • You want a lighter unit (1.8 kg) that is easy to angle under leaves in a tight space.
  • You are treating a mother plant shelf or a clone dome rather than a full canopy.
  • This is your first UV-C unit and you want the lowest entry point that still uses the same technology as the commercial version.

Choose the Pro if

  • You run a dedicated grow room, a 5x5 or larger tent, or more than one tent.
  • You grow perpetual, so there is always a canopy in flower that needs a daily pass.
  • You want to mount the unit on a light rail or mover for hands-free daily coverage.
  • You treat incoming clones, walls and surfaces between runs as well as the canopy, and want the job done fast.
  • You are a licensed producer or grow for testing, where a skipped day is a risk you do not want to carry.

Not sure which one? Count your plants in flower. Ten or fewer in one tent: Hobby. More than that, or more than one space: Pro. Shop CleanLight units or read Which CleanLight is right for your grow.

What is the same on both

  • Wavelength (254 nm) and the way it works: damaging the DNA of spores on the surfaces the light reaches.
  • The routine: a slow daily sweep over the canopy, a few seconds per plant, from the first day of flower through harvest. The independent SFU trials that found up to 86% less powdery mildew used a CleanLight Pro; the peer-reviewed study (Scott and Punja 2021) reports 45% under worst-case curative conditions. The Hobby uses the same lamp technology, so the method is the same; you spend longer per plant to deliver the dose.
  • No residue, no moisture, no re-entry interval, no chemical resistance.
  • Safety: neither unit should be pointed at skin or eyes. Both ship with safety glasses and gloves; follow the manual.
  • Voltage options: 120V for the US and Canada, 230V for Europe.
  • Replacement lamps for both are in the Replacement Products collection. Replace every two years regardless of hours, because UV-C output fades before the lamp visibly fails.

Can you upgrade later?

Yes, and growers do. A common path is Hobby for the first tent, then a Pro when the grow expands, with the Hobby kept for clones, mothers or a second small space. Tim, a grower in Portland, Maine, started with a Hobby and moved to a Pro as his outdoor grow grew. There is no penalty for starting small; the lamp technology is the same.

What neither unit does

Neither handheld unit treats the air. Spores that are floating in the room land on the canopy again after every pass. If powdery mildew keeps coming back despite a good routine, the missing piece is usually airborne spore load, and that is what the CleanLight Air is for. Many growers run a handheld unit for the plants and an Air for the room.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CleanLight Pro three times as fast as the Hobby?

Roughly, in lamp power: 36W versus 11W. In practice the time saving per plant depends on canopy density and how you sweep, but on a large canopy the Pro is noticeably faster.

Can I use the Hobby in a big grow room?

You can, but the daily pass will take long enough that most growers stop doing it consistently. For a dedicated room, the Pro is the unit that keeps the routine realistic.

Is the Pro too strong for a small tent?

No. Dose depends on distance and speed, not just lamp power. In a small tent you simply sweep a little faster. Follow the distance and speed guidance in the manual.

Do both units come with safety gear?

Yes. Both ship with UV safety glasses, gloves and a manual. Keep the beam away from skin and eyes and treat with the room empty of people and pets.

Which unit do licensed producers use?

The Pro, usually several, often mounted on light rails. The SFU research that tested UV-C on cannabis used the CleanLight Pro.

Should I buy the Starter Kit?

If you plan to run the unit daily through a full flowering cycle, the Starter Kit adds the spare lamp you will need at the two-year replacement point. See current kit options on the product pages.

One more thing

The unit that protects your harvest is the one you actually pick up every day. If a Pro feels like overkill for your tent but a Hobby would take you fifteen minutes each evening, the Pro is the right buy. If the Hobby takes you three minutes, save the money.
