Bud Rot (Botrytis) in Cannabis: How to Stop It and Protect the Rest
Bud rot — Botrytis cinerea — is the disease that turns a beautiful late-flower cola into grey mush from the inside out, often in a matter of days. It's more urgent than powdery mildew because by the time you see it on the surface, it's already been spreading inside the bud. How to spot bud rot early
Botrytis starts inside dense buds where it's humid and dark, so early signs are easy to miss:
- A single sugar leaf that yellows, wilts, or dries out for no obvious reason — pull it and check the bud beneath.
- Grey or brown fuzzy mold inside a cola.
- Buds that feel soft or look "off" compared to neighbors.
- In advanced stages, a dusty grey spore mass and a musty smell.
Check daily in late flower, especially on your fattest, densest colas — those are the highest risk. Catching one infected bud early can be the difference between losing a cola and losing a plant.
Why late-flower bud rot is so dangerous
Botrytis loves exactly the conditions a heavy late-flower canopy creates: high humidity, still air, cool nights, and dense buds that trap moisture. It spreads fast, and — crucially — you can't spray your way out of it. Wetting the canopy to treat it just gives the fungus more of what it wants, and residue-leaving fungicides are off the table on flower. So the strategy is different from PM: it's about aggressive removal plus environmental control plus residue-free surface protection.
What to do — in order
1. Remove infected material aggressively and correctly. Cut out any rotted section, going back into clean tissue and beyond — what you see on the surface is less than what's infected inside. Bag the infected material immediately; do not shake the plant or let spores fly. Sterilize your scissors between cuts. If a cola is badly gone, take the whole thing — it feels brutal, but botrytis will jump to neighbors, and losing one cola saves the plant.
2. Attack the environment. Get humidity down — aim below 50% RH, lower if you can hold it stably. Increase airflow so no still, humid pockets form inside the canopy. Keep temperatures stable; big day/night swings drive condensation, and condensation is fuel for botrytis. Defoliate to open the canopy and let air reach interior bud sites.
3. Do NOT wet the canopy. No foliar sprays, no misting, nothing that leaves moisture sitting in dense buds. This is the single most common way growers accidentally make bud rot worse.
4. Protect the surviving canopy through harvest. After you've removed infected material, the job is stopping new infection sites from establishing on the buds you have left. Where UV-C light fits with bud rot
UV-C light (around 254nm) damages the DNA of surface spores, including botrytis spores on the bud and leaf surface, so they can't establish and reproduce.
